Five Days and Counting

As the election draws ever closer, the candidates are spending the last days making their final pleas to voters. This means, of course, that the focus rests strongly on questions about economics, foreign policy, and healthcare. Still, education remains on the minds of many voters, and both John McCain and Barack Obama are pushing for support of their education plans. Both candidates have called for an increase in math and science education in American schools. Some of their latest statements can be found on API’s Science Bulletin, FYI.

Tuesday is the big day. Remember to get out and vote, or if you can’t, be sure to get an absentee ballot requested and turned back in before 8 p.m. on election day, or your vote will not be counted (I sent mine in last week)!

“Timed” Arguments

Round two of the presidential debates has come to an end. John McCain and Barack Obama participated in today’s “town-hall” debate, answering questions from some of the concerned citizens present (and from internet audience members). Not unexpectedly, the questions focused on healthcare, the economic crisis, the middle east – major concerns right now, for most of the American people. Climate change and energy were mentioned though. As usual, please visit C-Span’s DebateHub for full video coverage and transcriptions of the debate, and debate commentary.

And back in Washington, Capital Hill played host to the Engineering is Elementary project. Designed to inspire and educate younger children, EiE “aims to foster engineering and technological literacy among children” (from EiE’s homepage introduction). Information about the Capital Hill exhibition can be found on API’s FYI Bulletin, while information about the project itself can be found here, on EiE’s homepage.

On a sillier note, be sure to watch out for Tom Brokaw as the debate moderator. He has to reprimand the candidates at least three times about watching the red, yellow and green lights for their time limits. Eager fellows, they couldn’t quite take the hint!
